You run like a girl

Out of the Rapport "Kick it Off : homophobia in Football 2006"
As a mass phenomenon, football is not a reflection of society, but rather a place where cultural notions influential in society are being produced or reinforced. Football is also the last place where “true masculinity” may be lived and expressed both on and off the field. Here below are reproduced the introduction and the first part "you run like a girl: gender and homophobia" of a well-known report about homophobia in football, with kind authorization of the author and the EGLSF. A highly interesting reading in our current football-oriented period. > weiter

UN Security Council Resolution 1820 on sexual war crimes

Rap(e)in(g) International Law

Sonntag 13. Juli 2008 von Charli Carpenter
Topics&Roses is very proud to reproduce here below a major, useful analysis on recent United Nations Security Council Resolution condemning sexual violence as a war crime and a component of genocide (UNSCR 1820, June 19, 2008) and to add some more links to other converging analyses. According to the author below, "this resolution is not about promoting women’s rights. It is about governments recognizing - at least in theory - that systematic sexual violence undermines not just women’s rights but governments’ own security interests" and could even be formally a step backward. > weiter

Why a feminist perspective is urgently needed in ecological issues and related social struggles of the time.

Place matters because without a recognition of and attachment to places, we cannot defend the environment, we cannot feel a struggle, we cannot fight for anything... But then how to fight for environment issues in a gendered perspective? Within the different existing feminist-environmentalist strands of thought and action, the specific notion of women’s human rights to a safe and clean environment rather than their generic human rights, rarely emerges. Yet without an explicit notion of women’s human rights within these debates, connections with other rights-based women’s movements are difficult to make... Yet feminist concerns in mainstream environmental movements are rarely given prominence, which reinforces enduring notions that essentialise women as silent victims of dominant capitalist practices. This is a remarkable analysis and useful presentation made by a female activist leader from the Pacific region involved in sustainable devolpment fights, for Commission on Environment, Ecology and Sustainable Development (ICAE 7th World Assembly), in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 17-19, 2007 (original title "Environmental Education and Gender Justice"). > weiter

Women in Resistance... to the feminine ideal

A women’s film festival
Sonnabend 23. Juni 2007
Every year since 2003, a feminist film festival is being organised in the outskirts of Paris in Arcueil, whose name ist just the same like us : "Femmes en Résistance", which means "resisting women", of course. The 2006 edition of this Festival was dedicated to "Women in Resistance to the feminine ideal"... This is one topic for one year, yet somehow quite programmatic for women’s feminist initiatives in the field of art and creation. This is the introducing text, that we would like to share with you for its revigoring effect and its own interest... > weiter

The decolonization of the State is not possible without its depatriarcalization.

"The decolonization of the State is not possible without its depatriarcalization.(...) We affirm that the ’social pact’ rests on a sexual contract that has expropriated from women the sovereignty over our own bodies" This is what the Bolivian women’s social movement Mujeres Creando explains in this analysis full of energy and political boldness, produced in the context of the election campaign fort the Constitutional assembly (elected July 2006) led by President Evo Morales. It also criticizes the illusions of the indigenous paradigm, both "cultural" and "leftist", that made Evo Morales a hero with his election as the first Indian Bolivian President. A highly feminist text, as liberterian... and political, as it can be. About feminism as a global collective way to rethink society and the way to "govern" it ! Highly needed in these harsh times of mightful institutional powers oblitaring the sense of the human being at greater scales than ever... Published initially by Mujeres Creando under the title "The Law of Convocation to the Constitutional Assembly: Society didn’t propose a change of government." > weiter

Coming to knowledge, coming to politics : A reflection on feminist practices from the NextGENDERation network

Donnerstag 24. Mai 2007 von Rutvica Andrijasevic, Sarah Bracke
This is a highly interesting article produced by the feminist universitarian network NextGenderation. It tells about the purpose of the network, and much more : what does a "feminist generation" really mean? Why are feminist studies, and esp. feminist post-colonial studies, so weak in the European universities? What consequence does this have, politically speaking? Why are feminist theories and practices more disconnected than before? Why is feminism of crucial importance for the alterglobalist movement, its theorisation, its strategies and alliances? > weiter
